I am NOT primarily a metaphysician, but I talk to ALOT of people who are, more or less MOST of them say I have the basics down. (Cryotek, Fureya, etc) I am not the most accomplished metaphysician but after trying to make systems for afew years (Some failing horribly as I'm sure I will be reminded if anyone replies to this post) I think for the most part making a system is easy if you can keep everything together. Imo making a system should involve afew parts.
Source- The source of you're systems power, usually directly affiliated with the "Nature" of you're ability. A source can be anything from you're own energy to energy you have stored in a crystal, or even energy drawn from another dimension. A source typically is also directly connected to how powerful and how much energy you can pour into you're magic. Though in theory its possible to draw power from another dimension this might be considered overpowered or even "Godmodding" since such a source would have the potential to be practically infinite. Therefore a source must be balanced otherwise the system will fail or be considered Overpowered.
Nature/Element- The nature of you're system means what you're system can do, how it can affect things and how it is affected by things. An example of an abilities Nature would be "Necromancy" meaning the source of you're power would come from the netherworld, therefore it would follow netherworld principals or at least have some connection with death, most likely making it more effective against organic things, but less effective against inorganic things and holy elemental things. Or if you were using fire, obviously it would react differently to water/ice/wind etc. Basically the nature of you're system decides HOW you use you're system. There are other factors to consider too, like how you're magic affects things in sequence etc.
Sequence- Even if you chose to use Necromancy, or Cosmic power, or Transmundane, or w/e it is you want to use, as mentioned before, you typically have to decide HOW it works. An example of sequence used in a magic system would be the ability to taint other energy and use it against the caster within reason for instance, however it would most likely be repelled by energy of a certain nature etc. Or absorbing energy for instance is all well and good but you shouldnt be able to do it with impunity especially if the energy their sending at you is meant to be absorbed, or worse yet they are enacting an energy drain on you yourself. Everything has a double edge, Every strength has a weakness. Regardless sequence also governs how you actually USE you're system or how it can possibly be used. Once you have a basic Source, Nature, and Sequence ready you typically have you're system ready.
