-Azharans:
Physical: Tall, pale-skinned with long arms and three thick stalks that make up the foot of each of their two legs. The stalks are flexible and smooth as the Azharan’s are boneless. Their bodies’ rigidity comes from thick spinal tissue and cartilage, the organs protected by an inner carapace. To balance out their physique they have a wisp-like tail with a fan on the end that balances them out as they walk. The race has four arms and as with the feet, three appendages that make out the ‘hand’.
Azharan’s have little to no hair on their bodies, for they do not secrete the appropriate enzymes for hair growth, what hair they are born with falls off shortly after birth.
Females have slight rises in their chest, a remnant of an earlier time in their evolutionary history where the females had gizzards for use in feeding the young. A second stomach where food was carried and softened whilst essential enzymes and antibodies were secreted therein. The young would then be fed this mix much like Earth birds still do today. The gizzard has long since disappeared due to de-evolution and only the residual mound is now left over.
Reproduction: Azharan’s are born from eggs. The race has three genders. Males (Azhario), females (Azharia) and carriers (Azhari). Carriers make up 1:3 of the race, males and females are each 2:3 of the overall population. When the young emerges from the egg it is fully able to eat and learns most of its ‘childhood’ skills through a carrier’s immersion with the egg. Fertility rate is low and gestation of the egg is slow. Marriage is unheard of and the sexes live separately due to religious reasons. Carriers are highly respected as they are the ones that carry and care for the egg and young. They are responsible for its teachings. Eggs are raised in a hatchery where it is attended to almost constantly by the Carrier. The hatcheries are overseen and protected by Azhari-t’ar (Carriers who are not currently parenting an egg) and take care of the eggs when a carrier has other duties to attend to.
Classes/professions/Positions:
- Protectors: Azharans tasked with the protection of their people and home. They are the enforcers of the law and mete out justice to the deserving. (similar to the police force) In the past 300 or so years, the station has become little more than ceremonial as few disturbances occur in the highly controlled society of the Azharans. These roles can be filled by either males or females.
-Priests of Azhkar: Religious individuals who choose a life of servitude to their goddess, Azhkar. Tasks include upkeep of the temples and shrines, offering help and guidance to all Azharans and more. Religion is at the centre of Azharan life and as such the priesthood is a sacred and respected vocation. All sexes can be priests.
- Cleric: Priests who specialize in medical practice. They are the physicians of the Azharans. However, due to the sterile enclosed environment they have been inhabiting for the past 500 years disease is a non-issue and present-day clerics find themselves confronted only with minor upsets such as the odd scrape or bruise, easing the birth of a child from the egg, general overall health and as an aid to the elderly. All sexes may become clerics though the position is most commonly filled by Carriers.
- Matron: A high-ranking position within the priesthood, an overseer and councillor. This position is usually held by older and wiser members of the race and is filled almost exclusively by Carriers. A council of matrons act as advisors to the Matriarch.
- Matriarch: The grand high priestess and leader of all Azharan’s. This position can only be held by a carrier and is the highest honour that can be bestowed upon a Matron. When a matriarch dies, a new one is elected from among the Matron Council. Like a monarch, she rules with absolute power. The council may make suggestions, but in the end it is her word is law.
Religion:
Religion is an integral part of Azharan society. It dictates day-to-day life on a large scale as well as the caste system. At the head is the Matriarch, a grand high priestess and ruler of all. Beneath her are a council of Matrons and below them are lower ranking matrons. Priests rank just below them and Protectors are on the same level. Then your general populace, your merchants and traders, general workers and so on and so forth. For Azharan’s, religion is everything and nothing is more important. They worship their goddess, Azshka, a six-armed Azharan with a tail for a lower body and no facial features save for eyes that presumably burn with the fire of the Lifeblood. Azshka is the one and only true god and gift those loyal to her with the magical Lifeblood. The Lifeblood is according to legend the very blood of Azshka that tore from her veins when the Enemy tore her from the heavens and smote her to the ground. The Lifeblood is a strange shimmering blue mineral found in veins deep beneath the Dome. It is most commonly used as a power source and runs the entire dome on its renewable energy. Azkarans depend on it for everything. It is literally, their lifeblood. In return for their servitude, the Azkarans are shown the gifts of the Lifeblood and law and peace continues to stand strong. But Azshka is not solely known for benevolence. She is seen as an embodiment of both the land and the sky. Harsh and brutal as well as calm and guiding. It is a well-known fact that any who seek to dishonour or speak against her meet with unfortunate accidents.
