This is something I started to work on but never finished. I'll put what has been done and you are all free to expand with your own ideas.
Arcane Force: AKA Magic
The idea behind the whole system is the forces of physics. Whereas we already know of the strong, weak, electromagnetic, and gravity forces, there is room in physics for the possible discovery of more.
In that thread, Magic is the 5th force, known as the Arcane Force. Its messenger particle is known as an aetron, a particle that is capable of reacting with and influencing the other forces of physics, the four known and any new ones that show up.
The force most commonly acts in subtle ways that are often mistaken for effects of the other four. At times when it acts in less subtle ways, we end up with scientific anomalies that have yet to be solved.
Sentience itself is one product of this force, it is also responsible for proliferating the force. Each being that is capable of ‘I am’ has a field of sentience. Some fields are small, some are large, each field produces aetrons which in turn transmit Arcane Force. Most sentience fields are uncontrolled and simply release aetrons into the overarching Arcane force. Advanced fields are capable of directing the release of these aetrons, in turn directing the Arcane Force. This is typically where mages, psions, and other such individuals come from.
