Attack/Defense

I'm working on an attack/defense agains planar gateways that may or may not transport something inside and/or around the person using this. I don't enough about stuff yet to figure this out, but i figured maybe one of you guys could help me out with this.

The way i'd like this to work is Defense first, Attack second.

I've seen people use things basically like a planar wormhole to catch the attack before it hit them and turn it back on the person they were fighting.
