Taken from RPG Chat, if you are the author and you want it removed let me know and I will do so.

Magic.
Probably one of the more difficult ‘weapons’ to use in a free-form setting such as this. What are the limits? How powerful can you be without being too powerful? What is written here is merely a guideline for convenience. When possible, work things out with your opponent. This will create an experience that is more enjoyable for both sides.
First Issue: The Banned
Ah yes, the ever present ‘do not use’. Pretty simple stuff here.
• No Time ANYTHING, period. You may be the Dark Lord Wizard High Mage Jimmy, but you CANNOT CONTROL TIME. To explain, anything time related more or less would factor as an auto-hit, which aren’t allowed. So yea, use it for back story that you’re a time-traveling bounty hunter… but don’t use time travel directly in your posts.
• Insta-Kill is a Insta-Rejection! Don’t even try it. Cool though it may sound, a level 18 bajillion fireball is NOT acceptable.
• “There is no defense against this attack” attacks. This includes teleportation directly affecting your enemy (teleporting him somewhere against his will, teleporting something INSIDE him, and such), mind reading/control, anything that can’t be stopped, and anything that your opponent has no control over (the air around their head magically isn’t air BUT POISON!)
What you can do:
• Take your time (usually while an opponent is charging, or if you prepare something in advance) and use a damaging but no incapacitating strike of magic. Such as… your opponent is running 20 feet towards you, so taking your time you summon your strength and just as they’re a couple feet from you, the ground explodes as if a mine went off. Know that it isn’t going to be the force of an atomic explosion, or even a mine. Just something to hurt them and throw them off balance for a moment.
• Block something IF YOU HAD KNOWLEDGE IT WAS COMING. I can’t stress this enough. Yes. Magic can block about anything. But you can’t magically stop a bullet that you didn’t know was coming. No, you can’t react and summon the power fast enough to do this after a gunshot. You do not have eyes the in back of your head (unless you state that you do long before this instance) and you are not powerful enough that a bullet does nothing.
• Effects. I know this doesn’t sound like much compensation for the restrictions, but a good writer knows the use of effects.

But he knew that had not finished his foe, not the mere explosion with the power to crush a city... Aerrol opened a gate to the void, the land of neither life nor death, beneath the smouldering mass, only with a slight twist: the portal had be warped, causing it to become a vortex, sucking everything around into it, and thus, into oblivion. To ensure his foe's destruction, he warped above it, and formed a sphere of unbreakable force, lined with resistant wards and a dimensional lock over the whole thing, preventing warping and the like... Focusing his power into that sphere, Aerrol slowly closed it in, pushing the contents into the vortex. And, being at his leisure, he once again raised his protective shield.
That is bad. An explosion that can destroy a city and an unbreakable bubble sealed instantly around your target? No.
Example of a fight with some magic in it: Leviathan Vs. Sardis
